I will be honest I sometimes use my own body to test my beliefs and intuitive guidance. After being monitored yearly, my ObGYN would send me home saying "Keep doing what your doing Denise, it all looks good."
Until December 2014, I had a pelvic ultrasound that said I had a 5 cm cyst on my left ovary and 4 cm cyst on my right ovary. He pulled me into the office after reviewing the ultrasound and told me Denise we need to do a CA 125 and possible hysterectomy. My heart sank I went from being a patient with tears in my eyes to a nurse in a matter of seconds and felt myself flipping between roles of patient and nurse.
This is my first time since I became a nurse over 15 years ago that I had been faced with the challenge of surgery and possible cancer. I said " I am going have to sleep on this decision and call you on Monday. In the meantime, I will go get my lab drawn.
I sat in my car and cried like a baby all the work that I had been doing to heal my pelvic and now another surgery. I am nauseated right now just going back to that moment in my car. And then something within me said Denise pull it together you know what to do....
This is when I started looking back at the modalities that had helped me in the past. Number one being changing my mindset on what endometroisis meant according to Christiana Northup MD and author Women's Bodies Women's Wisdom. A book I started using in 2006,. I started applying her work to my current life situation. Secondly, I found a local acupuncturist Anne Biris at Eastern Integrative Services and started receiving acupuncture and taking chinese herbs.
